Science and Culture: Integrating Indica-Sativa Terminology at East Fork
At East Fork, we haven’t generally used the terms Indica, Sativa, and Hybrid to refer to cannabis products because data consistently shows that these botanical terms no longer reliably relate to a plant’s genetics or effects.
However, we’re evolving our practices on this issue: you’ll see us using this labeling on some of our products going forward. We want to help people find what they’re seeking, and we recognize that many people continue to find the Indica-Sativa-Hybrid labels helpful.
All About Cannabinoids
First, THC got all the attention. Then, CBD became hot. Now everyone’s getting into CBG.
But you may know that there are more than 100+ different cannabinoids that can be found in the cannabis plant!
Researchers are still discovering and describing new cannabinoids, and working to understand the effects that each can have.
Hemp Bar’s Last Mocktail Pouring in June
After an exciting two years, East Fork Cultivars has made the difficult decision to close Hemp Bar.
In May of 2021 we opened Hemp Bar, East Fork’s retail experiment combining CBD products made with hemp sourced from our farm, a creative mocktail program, cannabis science education, and a family-friendly, welcoming space for social consumption.
A Brief Trip Through Cannabis Classification
Ever wonder why the terms indica and sativa are used to describe different varieties of cannabis? The terms have changed meaning over time and alternatively, classifying cultivars with chemotypes can be more helpful and informative when looking for what products you want to use. Chemotypes can provide more information on CBD, THC and CBG ratios. It more accurately describes what you can expect out of a certain cultivar and not just a general idea. The original meanings were based on the physical characteristics of the plant rather than the feeling it will provide, which is what the meanings have evolved into.
Oil Flavor Profiles Revealed at Tasting Event
In May 2022, Hemp Bar hosted East Fork’s “Parched Llama” event that featured tastings of our Organic Single-Cultivar Hemp CBD Oil integrated with hemp-infused mocktails and paired bites.
Farm-to-table pioneer Chef Sebastian Carosi carefully crafted the libations and appetizers to showcase the unique flavor palette of each single-cultivar oil. The reaction was overwhelmingly positive, which was a pleasant affirmation of our team’s hard work.
East Fork Cultivars and Peak Extracts Unite
East Fork Cultivars is thrilled to announce that we have officially joined forces with our longtime partner Peak Extracts.
As independent, family-owned companies with aligned values, East Fork and Peak are strategically banding together in a time of increasing commoditization and corporatization of the cannabis industry.
Why We Cultivate Native Plants on the East Fork Ranch
East Fork Cultivars and other farms are working on a special cultivation project in collaboration with The Understory Initiative and support from the US Fish & Wildlife Service: growing plants that are native to Oregon’s coastal meadows to produce seeds for use in habitat restoration projects in these sensitive habitats.
Why the llama?
Sometimes people ask us: Why the East Fork llama logo? And all the other llama stuff?
And the answer: it’s a homage to the majestic creatures who roamed the farm directly before us.

Erasing Harmful Myths of Cannabis Use with Professional Athletes
Athletes operate at the bleeding intersection of human performance, popular culture, cannabis policy and the law – with collisions often taking place explosively in the public eye.
Use of cannabis by professional athletes is common and widespread, despite the continued legal and career risks. (Amateur athletes and weekend warriors, too!)
Why do so many athletes choose cannabis? And how are athletes a bellwether for the general population?
Current Regulatory Changes in Oregon’s Cannabis and Hemp Markets
Edibles sold in dispensaries can now have up to 100mg of THC per package instead of 50mg. On July 1, 2022 hemp-derived edibles limit increases to 2mg of THC in a single serving and up to 20mg THC per container of hemp product, hemp tinctures can contain up to 100mg total THC, but cannot exceed 0.3% total THC by weight. The above limit applies to all forms of THC, including Delta-8 THC.

How We Dry Hemp Flower in a Kiln
Each season, East Fork Cultivars grows around nine acres of USDA Organic Certified hemp. Our hemp is carefully bred and cultivated for its resinous flower buds, the part of the plant that produces exciting compounds like CBD, CBG, aromatic compounds, and much more.
Drying hemp flowers that preserve therapeutic compounds takes a lot of planning, care, and refined infrastructure, particularly at scale.
Honoring the Indigenous Heritage of the Farm
Delving into the Indigenous history of East Fork’s farmland was a deep dive into various historical accounts and sources – some of which, as we discovered, have been misinterpreted or came from informants with a limited understanding to begin with.
