Oil Flavor Profiles Revealed at Tasting Event

In May 2022, Hemp Bar hosted East Fork’s “Parched Llama” event that featured tastings of our Organic Single-Cultivar Hemp CBD Oil integrated with hemp-infused mocktails and paired bites.

Farm-to-table pioneer Chef Sebastian Carosi carefully crafted the libations and appetizers to showcase the unique flavor palette of each single-cultivar oil. The reaction was overwhelmingly positive, which was a pleasant affirmation of our team’s hard work.

But even more importantly, we were able to gather feedback and systematically analyze the data that was shared with us.

Data analysis revealed clear overall trends of the flavors and sensory experiences that most people report from each cultivar (with the acknowledgement that people’s individual experiences do vary).

These results are empirical, though not designed as a scientific study or analyzed for statistical significance. However, this is the first time we’ve gathered simultaneous, real-time feedback from so many people about our Single-Cultivar Hemp CBD Oil, so it was truly exciting for us to see these pictures emerge.

Data analysis (both quantitative and qualitative) from the responses recorded by 43 people at the event revealed distinct flavor profiles and experiences for each oil.

Overall, here are the “big picture” categories:

  • Delicate (mildest flavors): White CBG, Blue Orchid

  • Balanced (moderate flavor): Oregon Sweetgum

  • Bold (strongest flavor): Sour Pineapple

In the tradition of a graduating high school class, here are some superlatives and detailed profiles about our “class” of our Organic Single-Cultivar Hemp CBD Oils, as well as ideas about how to choose the best fit for your preferences.

Blue Orchid: “Most Floral”

For our Blue Orchid Single-Cultivar Hemp CBD Oil, tasters reported a predominantly floral flavor influence, characterizing it as delicate and smooth.

Numerous commenters noted the Blue Orchid oil’s creamy texture and subtle flavors, with “dainty” and “delightful” floral notes.

Some tasters reported slight nutty and bergamot notes, with others comparing it to “dessert” and “cologne, in a good way”.

Feedback included that the Blue Orchid oil was a “great pairing with the haupia” (coconut pudding) and that it “opened more flavors”.

White CBG: “Most Creamy” and “Most Neutral” (*Fan Favorite*)

The White CBG Single-Cultivar Hemp CBD Oil got feedback as our most “neutral” flavor of the bunch – but also as a notable fan favorite.

This suggests a broad appeal, great for people who are new to craft hemp oils or aren’t looking for strong flavors.

Rating it as very mild-flavored and creamy-textured, tasters loved this oil’s combination of slight fruity, vegetal, earthy, and pine flavors.

Numerous tasters observed notes of fruit, with several specifying citrus, and a mention of “guava or passionfruit.”

A few also tasted pine or sweetness, while some one-off comments found more uncommon flavor notes such as “popcorn,” “basil,” “musky,” and “funky.”

One taster summed up: “Very sweet, yet subtle. Perfect for a first-timer! My favorite of the bunch.”

Oregon Sweetgum: “Most Earthy”

Our Oregon Sweetgum Single-Cultivar Hemp CBD Oil proved to be a middle of the road option for those who prefer a classic flavor profile.

With moderate-strength flavor – but overall not very spicy or bitter – this oil is forward in earthy and vegetal flavors (including cannabis tones), with slight floral, pine, musk, gassy, and sour notes.

There were an equal number of comments from tasters highlighting both sweet and sour tones, as well as diesel, cannabis, and “peppery” or “arugula” flavors.

One commenter said that it would be “great as salad dressing!” while another gushed that it was “sooo good infused into avocado toast! I even drizzled it on top.”

Sour Pineapple: “Sweetest AND Spiciest AND Diesel-iest AND Muskiest” (*Fan Favorite*)

The consensus is that Sour Pineapple Single-Cultivar Hemp CBD Oil is for those who want it all!

Rated overall as our boldest flavor – and another fan favorite – the feedback for the Sour Pineapple oil illustrated a beautifully complex mosaic of different flavors.

With characteristic descriptors such as "zesty" and "energizing", tasters rated it as moderately spicy, diesely, earthy, and musky, and slightly floral and vegetal too.

Tasters described the oil’s unique profile overall as both sweet and bitter at the same time, evocative of the forest, pines and rose petals. They also found unique notes such as mango, camphor, mint, and hops.

Although “sour” is in the source cultivar’s name, feedback reflected that the oil has not so much a “sour” taste as a bit sweet, spicy, and bitter. A few commenters noted that it “tastes like the plant,” and “the hemp flavor comes through in the best possible way.”

One person evocatively commented that they “want to put it on food, like pizza crust before baking, or drizzle on bruschetta,” while another simply exclaimed, “WOWIE!”

So How Do I Decide?

There’s a Single-Cultivar Hemp CBD Oil for every taste!

Considerations include:

  • Do I prefer a mild, moderate, or strong flavor intensity?

  • Do I prefer Floral, Creamy,  Earthy, or Zesty flavor tones?

If you are sourcing for pets, keep in mind that they may like the mild flavors best. However, they may also benefit from various terpene profiles that include additional anti-inflammatory terpene components such as beta-caryophyllene.

You can use the scannable QR codes on the packaging (or on our website) to look up the terpene profiles on the Certificates of Analysis (COAs) for the batch you are purchasing.

And just for fun (or those who love to look to nature and the stars in the zodiac)… here’s another way to choose.

We also noticed that each of our four current Single-Cultivar Hemp CBD Oil flavor profiles seems to resonate with the qualities of one particular element of nature: Earth, Air, Water, and Fire.

After all, our plants are born of and shaped by these four elements, including the influence of fire in the Southern Oregon landscape!

So, if you have an affinity for:
