Ask a grower: growing hemp at home part 2

Let's debunk some myths together in our second installment of Ask A Grower! We have teamed up with our friends at Grow It From Home to bring you some fantastic hemp to grow at home. Grow It From Home’s head gardener Emily Gogol will help you grow hemp at home easily and with confidence.

Question: Is growing hemp any different than growing medical/recreational/THC marijuana?

From the gardener’s perspective, it is no different. Whatever the legal definition (hemp, marijuana, recreational, medical) that plant is always Cannabis. You grow red and yellow tomatoes the same in your garden, and you can grow all types of Cannabis the same way in your garden as well.

“Can you tell by eye which plants contain CBD or THC, or are called hemp or marijuana? Nope! They all look and grow the same, it is all Cannabis.”

Question: Do I have to grow indoors, with special lights, to get the biggest buds with the most trichomes for smoking?

No, and please, please, don’t waste money on an expensive setup. First, commercial growers like East Fork Cultivars produce some of the most sought after flower in the industry and they do it all outdoors. Second, many ‘long-time smoker, first time gardeners’ grow outdoors on a patio in a container or in their backyard and get the biggest, resiny buds by just caring for the plant like they would a tomato plant. If you start with quality plants (not seeds you found in some shake!) you will be rewarded with great flower.

Outdoor grown hemp is so easy and rewarding - you’ll get loads of massive sticky buds, no need to hide your hemp in the basement with an expensive light setup.

Question: The photos I see online of outdoor grown plants are huge. Do I have to grow huge plants?

Again, no. Our fantastic hemp to grow at home will not get above 5-6’ tall in your backyard, and that is without any trellis or special pruning, just plant the seedling and go. If you’d like to keep your plants smaller, you can A) plant them later, like beginning of July or B) just prune them to the height and shape you want before they go into flower or C) grow them in a container. Hemp is really adaptable!

Our hemp plants don’t have to get very big to yield a lot of flower - keep them small by planting later, growing in a container, or giving them a haircut sometime in July before flowering starts.
